Composite Restorations

composite fillingsWhen bacteria come in contact with tooth enamel for extended periods of time, dental decay may develop. Foods containing sugar or starch provide fuel for bacteria to reproduce and they create an acidic environment that softens tooth enamel.

When patients have poor home care or miss professional dental cleanings, they increase the risk of decay exponentially. Even with a diligent home care routine, patients still run the risk of developing decay because home care alone cannot remove all of the calculus and bacteria from between the teeth and beneath the gum line.

Certain medical conditions and medications can also place patients at a greater risk, and so can having a poor diet. With diligent care, it is possible to control dental decay.

Composite (Tooth-Colored) Filling Restorations

Olga Frey, DMD, precisely and gently removes all signs of decay from the patient’s tooth and sterilizes the area to guarantee the eradication of all bacteria. Next, she will place composite material inside the patient’s tooth to fill in the cavity left by the decay.

After Dr. Frey cures the composite material, allowing it to harden, she will make final adjustments to the shape of the filling and the occlusion (bite) to ensure a comfortable fit. She will shape and polish the surface of the filling to a smooth finish. Composite fillings will seal the tooth and prevent bacteria from causing further damage.

Advantages of Composite Fillings

Composite fillings offer numerous aesthetic advantages over traditional amalgam fillings. Because composite resin comes in a wide variety of shades, Dr. Olga Frey can choose a shade that closely matches the patient’s natural tooth color, resulting in a seamless, natural-looking restoration.

Because composite fillings require the removal of less healthy tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings, the patient retains a significantly greater amount of healthy tooth structure without compromising strength or longevity.

Amalgam fillings are made of metal, which causes them to expand and contract with changes in temperature. Over time, this can compromise their integrity. While the American Dental Association assures us as to the safety of amalgam fillings, many patients simply prefer the aesthetics of composite restorations.

Dental Bonding

For patients with small cosmetic imperfections or damage to their smiles, Dr. Frey can use tooth-colored composite to improve the patient’s comfort and appearance. Dental bonding can repair small flaws such as chipped, worn, misshapen teeth or to close minor gaps between teeth. Dental bonding provides an economical solution for many patients wishing to improve the appearance of their smiles.
