Veneers are thin porcelain restorations created to look like natural teeth. They provide strength similar to tooth enamel, and we generally use them to improve the overall beauty of patients’ smiles. Porcelain veneers offer solutions to patients who have concerns about the aesthetics of their smiles and wish to seek a uniform, seamless appearance.
What Cosmetic Issues Can Veneers Correct?
Porcelain veneers look realistic, like natural teeth, and address a wide variety of cosmetic issues:
Deep stains – Sometimes dentists cannot improve stubborn dental stains with professional teeth whitening alone. Porcelain veneers work by covering stained natural teeth with porcelain in order to produce a whiter smile.
Misaligned teeth – Porcelain veneers improve misaligned teeth without years of orthodontics.
Worn teeth – Years of grinding and clenching can wear teeth down, giving them a shortened appearance. Veneers provide length to shortened teeth and protect the exposed dentin.
Chipped or broken teeth – Veneers restore the appearance of chipped teeth from sports, teeth grinding, or an accident by covering those flaws and any sharp edges.
Gaps – Veneers correct unusually spaced teeth or gaps between teeth, providing an evenly spaced smile.
Treatment With Porcelain Veneers
Since porcelain veneers are a custom dental restoration, dental impressions assist with the creation and fit of the veneers. Study models assist Dr. Frey in determining the number, shape, and size of potential veneers. She discusses preferences such as color and smile shape with her patients in order to provide them with the aesthetic improvements they envision.
When she receives the permanent restorations, Dr. Frey will bond them to her patient’s teeth, creating an airtight seal to keep out bacteria and decay. The permanent restorations may require a few days of wear in order to get used to how they feel. She will make any final adjustments to her patient’s bite to ensure proper functionality and comfort.
Care of Porcelain Veneers
Patients who have impeccable dental hygiene at home and maintain regular exam and professional cleanings in our office will experience greater longevity with all dental restorations. Avoiding activities such as biting into non-food items likes pens, pencils, and other hard objects will help prevent unnecessary wear and tear to all restorations, including porcelain veneers.
Nightguards and sports guards may prove beneficial for patients who clench, grind, or participate in sports activities that may cause damage to their teeth.
